Appointment Types
First Session (45-60 minutes)
This is the first time I will meet with you in person. I will begin to get to know you and learn about the difficulties you've been facing recently. I can provide paperwork via email prior to this session to save time, including forms regarding your background information, information about confidentiality and psychotherapy, and questionnaires. We will discuss your symptoms and investigate potential diagnoses. Arriving at a diagnosis helps us design the best course of treatment. If your diagnosis is better suited to another clinician, I can provide a referral to an expert in your area of difficulty, and, if you'd, like a detailed report regarding your diagnosis. Therefore, the initial assessment session is not a guarantee of continuing with therapy.
Standard Psychotherapy Session (45-50 minutes)
In CBT, you can expect include a review of between therapy assignments and a review of progress and trouble-shooting. We will collaboratively set an agenda and prioritize topics to discuss. You will learn to cope with and apply skills to problems you're experiencing. The end of the session will include assignments for the time between this and our next appointment. You can also offer feedback about how you think the session went, and what you'd like to experience more or less of during upcoming sessions. As you begin your therapy experience, the next session or two may be focused on learning about and applying cognitive behavioral theory of emotional problems to your difficulties. We will also explore how your can maximize your personal growth through CBT.
Extended Psychotherapy Session (55-60 minutes)
Similar to the standard session, however I provide extra time. This may be appropriate for intensive therapy, sessions in which we confront anxieties in the real world (called in vivo exposure), and sometimes couples therapy. Longer sessions do not necessarily guarantee quicker outcomes and resolution of difficulties.
Group Therapy Session (time varies by size of the group)
Depending on the size of the group, this may run from 45 to 90 minutes long. Group therapy sessions usually revolve around a central theme, such as reducing social anxiety, increasing parenting effectiveness, or coping with fertility difficulties.
